For further exercise in mechanical reading, the child is given Phonetic Reading Cards which contains pictures of words that are spelled phonetically.

These are the Montessori language materials (i.e., picture cards) to jump on after much practice with the sandpaper letters and movable alphabets.

Reading Stages

The child will go through these in sets and stages (up to level 9), beginning with CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant). Then, the consonant blends, words with long vowel sounds, and irregular words. Finally, the child is able to decode and read through common words in the English language.

– Stage 1: CVC Words
– Stage 2: Consonant Blends
– Stage 3: Digraphs
– Stage 4: -ng & -nk Words
– Stage 5: Silent E
– Stage 6: Long Vowel Sounds
– Stage 7: Diphthongs
– Stage 8: Silent Letters
– Stage 9: Other Irregular Words

The progression in stages takes into account the letters/sounds that were previously learned. Unfamiliar words or rules from later stages are not mixed in (i.e., to isolate the rule or principle being learned in every stage).
